Common Sunglo failures we fix

Most "dead" Sunglos don't need replacing — they need diagnosis. Here's what I'd be checking on a service visit.

  • Sunglo won't stay lit

Likely area: pilot assembly and thermocouple.

What I'd check on a visit: the classic Sunglo no-light — pilot won't stay lit. Usually thermocouple or pilot fouling, a straightforward fix. I test the safety controls rather than bypassing them.

When parts may be needed: thermocouples and pilot assemblies.

  • Weak flame

    Likely area: regulator and burner.

What I'd check on a visit: gas delivery and burner condition — the issues that leave patios lukewarm. I measure what's actually coming off the unit before recommending parts.

When parts may be needed: regulators, burners, and emitters.

  • Ignition problems

Likely area: push-button and electronic ignition.

What I'd check on a visit: the full ignition path — including units other companies gave up on.

When parts may be needed: igniters and ignition modules.

  • Worn out, not broken — wheels, housing, cosmetic

Likely area: the whole unit, end to end.

What I'd check on a visit: whether it's a repair or a rebuild. I refurbish Sunglos, so my teardowns go deeper than a swap-and-pray service call — powder coat, housing, full mechanical refresh. If it's rebuildable, I'll tell you.

When parts may be needed: housings, wheels, emitters, and controls.

  • Gas smell

Shut the heater down. Don't try to light it.

Gas leaks jump the queue — call (818) 590-5952 directly. This is the one symptom where the right move is a phone call, not a form.

When the fix needs a licensed installer

Most Sunglos are self-contained — the heater is the whole system. But if yours is plumbed to a fixed gas line and the problem is upstream of the heater, that's licensed gas work. I'll tell you which side of the valve you're on, document what's needed, and coordinate the licensed work.
