Sunglo: the classic, perfected

Sunglo (by Infrared Dynamics) makes the heaters most people picture when they think 'patio heater' — including the A270, the 40,000 BTU portable propane unit that anchors our rental fleet and our refurbished program.

Who Sunglo is for

Who it's for. Restaurants that need flexible freestanding heat, event venues, and anyone who wants the classic mushroom heater done right.

What it does well. Portable, high-output, and dead simple to run. Every tech knows it, parts exist, and it just works.

Where it fits. Open patios, event spaces, supplemental heat between mounted units — anywhere the layout changes.

The Sunglo lineup

What each model is for, in plain language.

  • A270 — 40,000 BTU portable propane

The restaurant patio standard. Freestanding, high output, available new or certified refurbished — and the backbone of our rental fleet.

  • Permanent post models

Bolt-down installations for patios that want portable-style heat without anything walking away.

  • Suspended models

Hang where floor space is precious.

Fuel, mounting & clearances

Fuel options. Propane for the portables — roughly 8–10 hours per tank on high, depending on conditions. Fixed configurations run off your infrastructure; confirm fuel when you request a quote.

Mounting options. Freestanding portable, bolt-down post, or suspended — pick the configuration that matches how the patio actually gets used.

Important clearances. Freestanding clearances per manufacturer spec — keep units clear of foot traffic, doorways, and combustibles.

The honest verdict

Different patios need different heaters. Here's where I'd spec Sunglo — and where I'd honestly point you at something else.

When I would consider it

  • You need heat without infrastructure — no gas line, no electrician.
  • Your layout changes with events or seasons.
  • You want to try before you buy — rent the exact model first.
  • You need heat this week, not next quarter.

When I would look at something else

  • Permanent covered patio where overhead mounted heat would be cleaner and free up floor space — Sunpak.
  • Covered patio with power and no gas line — Infratech electric.
  • Wind-blasted, exposed patio — SunStar.
  • The heater needs to look like furniture — Italkero.

Not sure which model fits? Ask Eric.

Tell me about the patio — dimensions, a few photos, portable or permanent — and I'll tell you what I'd put on it.

Every new Sunglo carries its full manufacturer warranty, with claims handled through me directly. Refurbished units are tested, serviced, and sold with a warranty.

Field notes: Sunglo

What working with this equipment actually teaches you.

  • The classic black mushroom — and I rebuild them.

My refurbished Sunglo program: used units inspected, rebuilt, and tested. Same heat, a fraction of new. Ask what's on the bench right now.

  • Post-mount models for the permanent version.

Want the mushroom look bolted down — no tanks to swap, nothing that walks away? That's the post-mount configuration, separate from the portable A270.

  • Refurbished vs new is a real conversation.

If the bones are good, a rebuild is the smart money. If not, I'll tell you to buy new. I sell both, so the advice is honest.

Common questions

New or refurbished Sunglo?

Our certified-refurbished A270s are tested, serviced, and sold with a warranty — the fastest way to heat a patio without the new-unit lead time or price.

How long does a propane tank last on an A270?

Roughly 8–10 hours on high depending on conditions. Our rental and leasing programs include propane handling so you never think about it.

Do you rent Sunglos before purchase?

Yes — try before you buy is official policy. Rent the exact model, then decide.
